Philadelphia medical museum receives 'donation' of human fetuses; police investigating
PHILADELPHIA (CNN) — In Philadelphia, a medical history museum is wondering who sent them a package that appeared to have two preserved fetuses inside.
The museum received the package on Tuesday and now police are investigating.
"I’ve been here for almost twenty years, and I don't recall a situation like this,” said the museum’s curator, Anna Dhody.
Dhody says she has seen a lot in her time as the curator of the Mutter Museum, an institution that showcases medical history, and has more than 20-thousand unusual specimens.
But she was not expecting what happened this week, when a package arrived in the mail.
“Well, I opened the package and there was a letter on top, so I opened the letter first, so I knew what I was going to see when I finished reading the letter, and it was two specimens, medical specimens, that we did not ask for."
The specimens looked like human fetuses, located inside of jars filled with liquid.
Officials say the box had no return address listed.
The letter was simply signed - 'a retired physician.'
“The letter indicated that they were sending this to us as a donation, but that's not something we can do without the proper paperwork, the proper information, so that was not something we could do."
Because of ethical and legal concerns, Dhody called Philadelphia police.
They arrived at the museum around 11:30 a.m. to begin their investigation.
“Police got here, they assessed the situation, they called additional police, assessed the situation. The medical examiner's office was called, and they ultimately were the ones to take care of that."
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Philadelphia police department.
